Bill Gross has founded a lot of startups and incubated many others — and he got curious about why some succeeded and others failed. So he gathered data from hundreds of companies, his own and other people’s, and ranked each company on five key factors. He found one factor that stands out from the others — and surprised even him.
Bill is the Founder of Idealab, an incubator of new inventions, ideas and businesses (he’s now the Chairman and CEO). In this insightful talk he explores his findings over the years to discover the biggest single reason why startups succeed.
Some years ago I started Venture Partnership Ltd in London. We worked purely with Venture Capitalists, incubators and angel investors to build the leadership, management teams and key people in line with funding milestones for the startups they were investing in. Not only was I building a startup, but our clients via their investment vehicles were startups too. We all pondered the big questions – what mattered most in the success of a startup: the Idea, Team, Timing, Business Model or Funding? In this TED2015 Bill delivers wonderful clarity on the much debated issue.
If you are an entrepreneur or involved in any new venture be it corporate or startup, these insights may well sway the jury one way or another.
